Phil R. Fischer, M.D., went to medical school at University of California, Irvine, did a pediatric residency at the University of Utah, and studied tropical medicine at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (UK). He then practiced for 6 years in central Africa before returning for 6 more years at the University of Utah. From 1999 through 2020, he was at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He is now at a new Mayo Clinic-affiliated hospital in Abu Dhabi. He is primarily a general pediatric clinician but has always been heavily engaged in student and resident education. His research interests are broad (from tropical infections to deficiencies of calcium, vitamin D, and thiamine to chronic fatigue in adolescents). He has coauthored approximately 200 PubMed-indexed papers, co-edited 2 editions of the American Academy of Pediatrics’ Textbook of Global Child Health, and authored Tired Teens (2021). He is a professor of pediatrics both at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine (USA) and the Khalifa University College of Medicine (UAE).
